    Why talk to a counselor, who really doesn't know me, instead of a trusted friend or family member?

    There might indeed be occasions when a trusted friend or family member could help. Yet there are also occasions when they can’t. For example, your concern might be too delicate a subject to share with a friend or a family member. Also, meeting with a counselor offers confidentiality and a nonjudgmental environment where ideas can be explored and solutions tested.

    When should I seek counseling?

    As a general rule, consider counseling when your concerns are significantly impacting family relations, productivity at work, sleep, even your health. If you feel your health is being effected, consider scheduling an appointment with your primary health provider to rule out an undiagnosed medical condition.

    Who else in my life should receive counseling with me?

    Sometimes it is difficult to know whether you should seek counseling only for yourself or to include others, such as a spouse or partner, your children, or perhaps the entire family. And although these are legitimate concerns, oftentimes they cannot be addressed until after an initial visit. Our best advice is to let us talk with you first. Once we’ve visited, you will have a better idea concerning which approach to take in the counseling process.

    What kind of counseling do you do?

    Each of our counselors practices his or her preferred approaches to counseling, including, but limited to, individual counseling, marriage or couples counseling, and family counseling. There are many types of counseling and many resources you can avail yourself of on the Internet in order to become familiar with some of these approaches. It might be beneficial to familiarize yourself with the these before your first visit.     How long should I go to counseling?

    You and your counselor together can determine this. When the issues you bring to the table are resolved, moving away from counseling is the natural next step. Please note, however, that if new issues were to arise to a level where you believe you might benefit once again from counseling, you are free to return.

    How do I find out if you accept my insurance?

    First, visit our Insurance & Fees [link to page here] page for a list of companies with whom we are in-network. If you don’t see your insurance company listed, please call our office at (210) 495-0675. We can take your information then contact your insurance company to see if we are in-network and, if so, what kind of mental health coverage you have.     I’ve noticed that there are so many different mental health professionals and licenses. How do I know which is right for me?

    First, visit our Insurance & FeesAll licensed mental health professionals can practice counseling. Some will also administer psychological testing, occasionally given to school-age children and adolescents to address issues focusing on intellectual functioning and learning. Concerning the various licenses, psychologists will have a Ph.D. or a Psy.D. after their name; others include Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs); Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs); Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs); and Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselors (LADC), among others. Psychiatrists are medical doctors with a specialty in psychiatry. They will have MD (Medical Doctor) after their name. They are the only mental health professionals in the state of Texas who can prescribe medications. Psychiatrists rarely engage in full counseling sessions. Most specialize in medication management with their patients and will commonly refer their patients to counseling.

    What is coaching and how is it different from counseling?

    Coaching helps clients to explore, define and clarify their personal and professional goals. These goals may be short-term actions needed to transition to the next level of a career or long-rang goals required to move through the next phase of life or fulfill a life-long ambition. Regardless, the client will learn how to identify and follow through with very specific and immediate actions that result in meaningful outcomes. In coaching, the client often takes an active role in setting the session agenda.Coaching differs from counseling in that the latter focuses on the healing of such psychological or mental health disorders as depression, anxiety, eating disorders, etc., all stemming from a patient’s past. Although counseling and coaching share some common elements, they are distinctively different and specialized training is needed for each.

    When are appointments scheduled?

    How long are counseling sessions?

    Generally, sessions are 45 to 50 minutes long.
